Fractional Product Marketing Leadership
I’m Megan Pratt, a fractional product marketing leader for B2B tech startups across the US, usually at Seed through Series B. I step in as your part-time head of product marketing for 15-20 hours a week for however long you need me, usually 3-6 months. In that time I build your positioning, messaging, sales assets and launch plans, then help you hire the full-time leader who carries it forward. Engagements start at $8,000 per month.
Signs you need a fractional product marketer
Most founders call me when product marketing has become everyone’s side job and nobody’s real one.
It usually looks like this:
Every rep tells a different story on sales calls, and win rates depend on who runs the demo.
Your website lists features, and prospects still ask, “So what exactly do you do?”
A launch is six weeks out and nobody owns the plan.
Your marketing team is one or two people, and all their time goes to demand gen.
You just raised a round, and the board wants a go-to-market story you can’t say in one sentence.
You know you need a head of product marketing, but you’re not ready for a $180k+ full-time hire, or you’re not sure what a great one looks like.
If even two of these sound familiar, the gap is already costing you. Each month without clear positioning means more deals lost on “no decision,” more content that misses, and a launch that lands quieter than it should.
What happens in the first 30, 60 and 90 days
Every startup is different, and a launch on the calendar can reorder things. Most engagements follow this arc.
Days 1–30: Listen, then lay the foundation
I interview your leadership team, talk with 5-10 customers, review won and lost deals, and map your competitive alternatives. We finish the month with a positioning workshop and a positioning document that product, sales and marketing all agree on. This is the foundation of the house, and everything else builds on it.
Days 31–60: Frame the story
We turn positioning into a messaging framework and a strategic narrative: the story of the shift in your market and why your product wins it. Then we put it to work. That usually means rebuilding your first-meeting sales deck around how your best reps actually sell, and rewriting your homepage messaging.
Days 61–90: Put it in front of customers
Now the house takes shape. I build the assets your team needs most, such as launch plans, customer case studies, competitive battlecards and a sales enablement kit. By day 90 your team has one source of truth, and you have a clear plan for what product marketing owns next.
Deliverables
What I build depends on where your gaps are. These are the most common:
Positioning document (ideal customer, competitive alternatives, unique value, market category)
Messaging framework by persona
Strategic narrative for sales, fundraising and the website
First-meeting sales deck
Website messaging and homepage copy
ICP and buyer personas
Competitive battlecards
Product launch plans and launch messaging
Customer case studies, built from customer interviews
Sales enablement kit
AI-ready messaging: your positioning and narrative loaded into your internal AI tools, so every AI-assisted email, deck and post stays on message
Hiring your full-time head of product marketing
A fractional engagement works best with a planned finish line. For most of my clients, that finish line is a great full-time hire.
Because I’ve built the foundation, I know exactly what the role needs. I help you:
Define the role and the first-year scorecard
Write a job description that attracts strategic PMMs, not just content writers
Design the interview loop and a practical take-home exercise
Interview finalists and give you a candid read on each one
Hand your new leader a complete house: positioning, messaging, assets and a 90-day onboarding plan
Your new hire starts on day one with a foundation already built, so they can focus on what comes next.
What clients say
“We move fast, and Megan kept up. In 5 months she helped take our messaging from scattered to one source of truth the whole team pulls from, including working with our team to help build our messaging, positioning and narrative into our internal AI. Along the way she shipped multiple launches, rebuilt our first meeting deck around how our best reps actually sell, and turned customer interviews into case studies.”
Stephen London, President, Fello.ai
“The day I found Megan, I thanked the marketing gods. I was a team of one and needed to ramp product marketing to crystalize our ICP and buying personas, develop a sales enablement kit, and accelerate content creation. She hit the ground running, inserted herself into work streams, and delivered meaningful value to Sharebite from moment one.”
Stephanie Bohn, Former CMO, Sharebite

Frequently asked questions
What is a fractional product marketer?
A fractional product marketer is a senior product marketing leader who works with your company part-time, usually 10 to 20 hours a week. You get head-of-PMM experience for positioning, messaging, launches and sales enablement without the cost and long-term commitment of a full-time executive hire.
How much does a fractional product marketer cost?
My fractional engagements start at $8,000 per month. Most clients spend less than half the fully loaded cost of a full-time head of PMM.
Should my startup hire a fractional PMM or a full-time product marketer?
Hire fractional when you need senior strategy fast, your positioning isn’t settled, or you aren’t sure what the full-time role should look like. Hire full-time once the foundation exists and you need daily execution. Many clients start fractional, then hire full-time with my help.
How quickly will I see results?
Most teams have agreed positioning within the first 30 days and a new sales deck or homepage messaging within 60. At Fello.ai, messaging went from scattered to one source of truth in five months, with multiple launches shipped along the way.
What stage of startup do you work with?
I work best with B2B tech startups from Seed through Series B. That’s usually the point where product-market fit is real but the story isn’t, and the team has outgrown founder-led messaging without yet hiring a dedicated product marketing leader.
What’s the difference between a fractional PMM and a product marketing consultant?
A product marketing consultant usually delivers a defined project, such as a positioning document or a launch plan. A fractional PMM joins your team on an ongoing basis, owns the function and stays to put the work into practice. I offer both, depending on what your team needs.
Do you work with startups outside Utah?
Yes. I’m based in St. George, Utah, and work remotely with B2B tech startups across the US, joining your Slack, meetings and planning cycles as part of the team.
Will you work with my existing marketing team?
Yes, and that’s often the best setup. I give your marketers the positioning and messaging they need to run campaigns that convert, and I coach junior PMMs along the way so the knowledge stays after I go.
